Ford is aiming to alleviate some of the challenges associated with EV charging by offering a free home charger. If you buy or lease a retail Mustang Mach-E, F-150 Lightning, or E-Transit between October 1 and January 2, the automaker will also send a technician to install it at no additional cost. Ford may choose to extend this program if it proves successful; however, fleet customers through Ford Pro will receive a $2,000 commercial charging cash incentive instead.
According to Joanna Stern from The Wall Street Journal, customers who take advantage of this offer will receive a Level 2 charger for their homes. This initiative could save Ford’s EV buyers and lessees significant money, as the Ford Charge Station Pro costs $1,310, with the company typically charging $2,000 for installation. However, those interested in this deal should ensure that their garage is properly wired to maximize the benefits of Level 2 charging.
Ford’s EV division has faced difficulties recently, with the company projecting losses of up to $5.5 billion in this sector this year. Earlier in the year, it reduced production of the F-150 Lightning due to lower-than-expected demand and redirected resources to produce more Broncos and Rangers. Later, Ford delayed several EV models, including a planned three-row SUV, and shifted its focus to hybrids. In August, the automaker ultimately canceled the three-row SUV project and further postponed other EVs.
While offering a free home charger and installation is a clever way to encourage EV purchases and leases, it may only serve as a temporary fix for the deeper issues facing Ford’s EV division.
